Flowing through lush farmland and ancient rainforest remnants, the Clarence River Valley is the Northern Rivers' quiet heart. This is a landscape of gentle rolling hills, historic river towns, and a sense of timelessness that feels a world away from the coast. The valley rewards those who slow down – whether you're paddling the broad, tea-coloured river, tasting local cheeses, or simply watching the light change over sugarcane fields.
Highlights & What to See
- Yamba – A relaxed coastal town at the river mouth, with patrolled beaches, a working lighthouse, and excellent seafood. Climb the lighthouse for panoramic views.
- Ulmarra – A perfectly preserved 19th-century river port with timber buildings, antique shops, and a historic pub overlooking the Clarence.
- Grafton – The valley's main city, famous for its jacaranda-lined streets (blooming in late spring), heritage architecture, and the Clarence River walk.
- Bundjalung National Park – Coastal heath and rainforest where the river meets the sea; spot wallabies, go fishing, or walk to Iluka Bluff for ocean views.
- Clarence River canoe or kayak trip – Paddle the calm, wide river past farmland and forest; hire a canoe at Ulmarra or Grafton for a half-day adventure.
- Local produce – Visit the Clarence River Valley's cheese makers, macadamia farms, and the weekly Grafton Growers' Market for seasonal fruit and artisan bread.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow two to three days to explore the valley at a relaxed pace. Spend one day in Grafton and the upper river, another day exploring Ulmarra and the lower river villages, and a third day for Yamba and Bundjalung National Park. If you're short on time, a single day can cover Grafton's highlights and a paddle near Ulmarra, but you'll miss the coastal charm of Yamba.
