Ulmarra is a sleepy historic village on the banks of the Clarence River, just south of Grafton. With its beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, antique shops, and a laid-back riverfront atmosphere, it's a delightful detour for anyone exploring the North Coast. The town's name is thought to be an Aboriginal word meaning 'to walk along the river', and that's exactly what you'll want to do.
Highlights & What to See
- Ulmarra Ferry – A free cable ferry crosses the Clarence River, offering a scenic shortcut and a glimpse of local river life. It's a charming, old-school experience.
- Heritage Buildings – The main street is lined with gorgeous timber and sandstone buildings, including the Ulmarra Hotel (c. 1902), the post office, and the School of Arts hall. Grab a coffee and wander.
