Shellharbour is a laid-back coastal city on the NSW South Coast, where a working harbour meets pristine beaches and a burgeoning food scene. It's the kind of place where you can watch fishing boats unload their catch in the morning and sip craft beer at a waterfront brewery by sunset. The vibe is relaxed and family-friendly, with a strong sense of community and a growing reputation for seafood and outdoor activities.
Highlights & What to See
- Shellharbour Marina & Harbour: Stroll the boardwalk, watch boats come and go, and grab fish and chips from one of the local takeaways. The marina is the heart of town.
- Killalea State Park: A coastal gem with the famous 'Farm' surf break, stunning headland walks, and the protected Killalea Lagoon – perfect for a swim or kayak.
- Bass Point Reserve: Snorkel or dive in the clear waters of Bushrangers Bay, explore the historic lighthouse, and keep an eye out for dolphins and migrating whales (May–November).
- Shellharbour Village: Wander the main street for boutique shops, cafes, and the excellent Shellharbour City Museum, which tells the story of the region's Indigenous and maritime history.
- Beaches: Shellharbour Beach and The Shallows are great for swimming and surfing, with patrolled areas in summer.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day trip from Wollongong or Sydney is feasible, but to truly soak up the coastal atmosphere, spend a full day and overnight. Arrive mid-morning, explore the marina and village, then head to Bass Point for snorkeling or a coastal walk. In the afternoon, catch a surf at Killalea or relax on the sand. Stay for dinner at one of the harbourfront restaurants – the local oysters are a must.
