Minnamurra Rainforest, part of the Budderoo National Park, is a lush pocket of ancient temperate rainforest just a short drive from Kiama and the South Coast beaches. The centrepiece is a spectacular elevated boardwalk that loops through towering cedar trees, past crystal-clear creeks and a thundering waterfall. It's an easy, family-friendly walk that immerses you in the sights and sounds of the Illawarra escarpment — think lyrebirds scratching in the undergrowth, the scent of damp earth and eucalyptus, and shafts of sunlight piercing the dense canopy. This is a must-do for nature lovers and anyone seeking a cool, green escape from the coastal sun.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Falls — A two-tiered cascade plunging into a deep pool, best viewed from the upper boardwalk lookout. The spray keeps the air cool and the ferns lush.
- Rainforest Boardwalk — A 1.6 km loop (wheelchair and pram accessible) that winds through towering coachwood, sassafras and cabbage tree palms. Keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds and their blue-decorated bowers.
- Lyrebird Lookout — A short detour off the main boardwalk where you might spot a superb lyrebird scratching for insects or mimicking other birds.
- Visitor Centre & Café — A modern centre with excellent interpretive displays on the rainforest ecology, plus a café with outdoor seating overlooking the forest.
- Picnic Areas — Shaded grassy spots near the creek, perfect for a packed lunch after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the boardwalk loop, including time to stop at the falls and lookout. If you want to linger at the visitor centre or enjoy a picnic, budget another 30–45 minutes. The walk is gentle, so you can easily combine it with a morning at Kiama or a coastal drive in the same day.
