Lake Illawarra is a vast coastal lagoon on the South Coast of NSW, just south of Wollongong. Its calm, shallow waters and surrounding wetlands create a serene escape for nature lovers, kayakers, and birdwatchers. The lake is fringed by parks, cycle paths, and small settlements, offering a peaceful counterpoint to the nearby surf beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Windang Peninsula – A narrow spit separating the lake from the ocean; walk the breakwall for panoramic views over both water bodies and spot pelicans and cormorants.
- Kanahooka Point – A popular spot for picnics and launching kayaks; the adjacent mangroves are home to herons and kingfishers.
- Birdwatching at Berkeley Wetlands – A constructed wetland with boardwalks and hides; look for black swans, spoonbills, and migratory waders.
- Lake Illawarra Foreshore Walk – A multi-use path that stretches from Windang to Tallawarra, perfect for cycling or strolling with constant water views.
- Kiteboarding and Windsurfing – The lake’s shallow, flat water and reliable breezes make it a top spot for beginners and pros alike, especially near the Windang bridge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the lake’s highlights: spend a morning kayaking or cycling the foreshore path, then enjoy fish and chips at Windang. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or plan to kiteboard, allow a full day to soak in the atmosphere. The lake is easily visited as a stopover between Sydney and the South Coast.
