Just a 90-minute drive south of Sydney, Kiama is a classic NSW coastal town where dramatic headlands and lush green hills meet the Pacific. Famous for its blowhole, historic lighthouse, and relaxed surf-town vibe, it’s an easy day trip or a lovely stop on a drive down the South Coast. The town centre has a handful of good cafés and galleries, while the surrounding coastline offers superb walking tracks and whale-watching vantage points.
Highlights & What to See
- Kiama Blowhole – The main attraction: a natural rock formation that sends seawater spouting up to 25 metres high when the swell is right. Arrive at high tide for the best show.
- Kiama Lighthouse – Perched on the headland next to the blowhole, this 1887 lighthouse offers panoramic ocean views and a short coastal walk.
- Kiama Coast Walk – A 20-kilometre trail linking Kiama to Gerringong, passing through rainforest, farmland, and cliff-top lookouts. Even a short section from the town to Bombo Beach is rewarding.
- Bombo Beach & Headland – A striking black basalt headland with hexagonal columns, popular with photographers and rock climbers. The beach itself is great for a quiet swim.
- Little Blowhole – Less crowded than the main blowhole, this smaller vent on the southern side of town can be surprisingly powerful in rough seas.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main sights – blowhole, lighthouse, and a quick walk to Bombo – in half a day. For a more relaxed visit, allow a full day to enjoy the coastal walk, a swim, and a leisurely lunch at one of the cafés on Terralong Street. If you’re basing yourself here for a few days, you can easily explore nearby beaches and the hinterland.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Berry – A charming heritage town 20 minutes north, known for its antique shops, bakeries, and the famous Berry Donut Van.
- Seven Mile Beach – A long, unspoilt stretch of sand between Gerringong and Shoalhaven Heads, ideal for a walk or a picnic.
