Perched on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo offers one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife experiences. With sweeping views of the harbour and city skyline, this world-class zoo is home to over 4,000 animals from more than 350 species. It’s a place where conservation meets adventure, and where you can get up close to iconic Australian wildlife alongside exotic species from around the globe.
Highlights & What to See
- Australian Walkabout: Wander through a natural bush setting where kangaroos and wallabies hop freely, and you can spot koalas dozing in eucalyptus trees.
- Great Southern Oceans: Watch Australian sea lions and fur seals glide through underwater viewing windows, with daily talks and feeding sessions.
- Wild Asia: Come face-to-face with majestic Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants in immersive habitats that mimic their native environments.
- Sky Safari Cable Car: Glide over the zoo for breathtaking aerial views of the harbour, then descend into the heart of the exhibits.
- Nura Diya Australia: This new immersive precinct showcases the cultural stories of Aboriginal people and their deep connection to the land and animals.
- Free-Ranging Bird Shows: Daily presentations where eagles, owls, and parrots fly overhead, demonstrating natural behaviours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors need at least a full day (6–8 hours) to see the zoo’s major exhibits, enjoy animal talks, and take in the harbour views. Arrive early to beat the crowds and ride the Sky Safari first thing. If you’re pressed for time, a half-day (3–4 hours) can cover the highlights, but you’ll want to prioritise the Australian Walkabout and the seal show. The zoo is steep and involves quite a bit of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and use the free bus or cable car to navigate the slopes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Taronga Zoo Ferry: The scenic 12-minute ferry from Circular Quay is an experience in itself, offering postcard views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
- Bradleys Head: A short walk from the zoo entrance, this harbourside track leads to a historic naval mast with panoramic views – perfect for a picnic.
- Mosman: Explore the leafy suburb’s village centre, with boutique shops, cafés, and the charming Balmoral Beach just a bus ride away.
- Sydney Harbour National Park: Combine a visit with bushwalks at nearby Nielsen Park or Chowder Bay, where you can swim at sheltered beaches.
