Manly
Manly is a sun-drenched coastal suburb of Sydney, famous for its golden beaches, relaxed surf culture, and the scenic ferry ride from Circular Quay that offers postcard-perfect views of the harbour and skyline. It’s a vibrant hub where laid-back beach life meets a buzzing café scene, boutique shopping, and a rich history as a seaside escape since the 19th century.
Highlights & What to See
- Manly Beach & The Corso: The main beach is a sweeping arc of sand perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the sun. The Corso, a pedestrianised strip connecting the ferry wharf to the beach, is lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops.
- Manly Scenic Walkway: This coastal trail from Manly to Spit Bridge (or vice versa) winds through national park, past secluded coves, and offers breathtaking ocean views. It’s a must-do for walkers and nature lovers.
- North Head Sanctuary: A dramatic headland with historic fortifications, WWII gun emplacements, and panoramic lookouts over the Pacific Ocean. It’s part of Sydney Harbour National Park and a great spot for whale watching (May–November).
- Manly Art Gallery & Museum: Housed in a historic building, this gallery showcases contemporary Australian art and local history, including surf culture exhibits.
- Shelly Beach: A calm, sheltered bay just south of Manly Beach, ideal for snorkelling, picnics, and family swims. It’s also a gateway to the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve.
Suggested Time to Spend
Manly can be enjoyed as a day trip from Sydney, but it’s worth spending at least a full day to soak up the atmosphere. Arrive by ferry (30 minutes from Circular Quay) and start with a morning coffee along The Corso, then hit the beach or walk part of the Scenic Walkway. For a more relaxed pace, stay overnight at one of the beachfront hotels and explore North Head at sunset. If you’re short on time, a half-day allows for a ferry ride, a stroll on the beach, and lunch at a seaside café.
