Maroubra Beach is a wild, windswept stretch of sand on Sydney's northern beaches, beloved by locals for its powerful surf and laid-back vibe. Unlike its more polished neighbours, Maroubra has a raw, untamed character – think dramatic rock platforms, rolling dunes, and a strong sense of community. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours watching the waves crash, spotting whales during migration, or grabbing a coffee from the iconic kiosk perched above the sand.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing at The Bra: Maroubra is one of Sydney’s premier surf breaks, with consistent swells that attract everyone from beginners (stick to the southern end) to pros tackling the famous “Bombora” reef break.
- Maroubra Beach Kiosk: This retro beachside café is an institution – grab a flat white and a bacon-and-egg roll, then sit on the deck watching the surfers and the endless ocean.
- Magic Point: At the northern end, this rocky headland is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in Sydney. Between May and November, you’ll see humpbacks breaching just metres away.
- Coastal Walk to Malabar: Follow the dramatic sandstone cliffs south to Malabar Headland – a stunning 3 km walk with panoramic views, wildflowers, and the chance to spot sea eagles.
- Maroubra Rockpools: The natural ocean pools at the southern end are perfect for a calm dip when the surf is too fierce, or for kids to paddle safely.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to soak up the atmosphere: arrive early for a morning surf or walk, then settle in for a long lunch at the kiosk. If you’re whale watching or doing the full coastal walk to Malabar, allow a full day. Maroubra is also great for a sunset session – the light over the ocean is magical.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coogee Beach: Just 10 minutes north, Coogee offers a more sheltered swim and a lively strip of cafés and pubs – perfect for an afternoon wander.
- Malabar Headland: The coastal walk from Maroubra leads to this rugged headland, with excellent walking trails and a historic rifle range.
- Bondi Beach: A 15-minute drive north, Bondi is the iconic Sydney beach experience – but Maroubra feels more authentic and less crowded.
- La Perouse: Head south to this historic peninsula with its old fort, museum, and stunning views across Botany Bay – great for a picnic.
- Royal National Park: A 30-minute drive south, Australia’s oldest national park offers incredible bushwalking, waterfalls, and the famous Figure Eight Pools (check tides before going).
