Perched on the rugged headland at the mouth of the Camden Haven River, this petite whitewashed lighthouse is a classic NSW coastal icon. Built in 1879, it still guides vessels through the tricky entrance to the port, and the short walk to reach it rewards with sweeping views across the Pacific, the river estuary, and the distant mountains. It’s a serene spot for sunrise or sunset photography, and the surrounding coastal heath blooms with wildflowers in spring.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lighthouse Itself – Climb the gentle slope to the base of the active, automated beacon; its crisp white tower against the blue ocean is a postcard-perfect scene.
- Coastal Walking Track – A 2.5 km return trail from the car park leads through banksia scrub and offers multiple lookout points over the headland and seabird colonies.
- Whale-Watching – During migration season (May–November), the headland is a prime spot to see humpbacks breaching offshore.
- Camden Haven River Mouth – Watch fishing boats and yachts navigate the channel, or simply enjoy the ever-changing surf and sandbars.
- Nearby Beaches – Combine your visit with a stroll on North Haven Beach or the patrolled Pilot Beach for a swim afterward.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for the walk and to soak in the views. If you’re a keen photographer or whale-watcher, budget extra time – sunrise or late afternoon are magical. The lighthouse itself is a quick stop, but the surrounding coastal scenery encourages lingering. Most visitors combine it with a morning or afternoon exploring Port Macquarie’s other attractions.
