Pilot Beach
Pilot Beach is a serene stretch of golden sand on the northern side of Port Macquarie, offering a laid-back escape from the busier town beaches. Backed by low dunes and fringed by coastal bush, this beach is a local favourite for swimming, surfing, and long walks. Its protected position inside the Hastings River mouth makes it ideal for families, while the headland at the northern end provides excellent vantage points for whale watching during migration season (June–November). The beach is part of the larger Town Beach precinct but feels distinctly quieter, with a natural, unspoilt character.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming & Surfing: The beach is patrolled in summer and generally has gentle waves, making it safe for swimmers. The northern end often has a small, consistent break popular with longboarders and learners.
- Coastal Walk: Follow the track from the car park over the headland to Miners Beach and the Tacking Point Lighthouse – a scenic 30-minute walk with panoramic ocean views.
- Whale Watching: During winter and spring, the headland offers one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the area. Bring binoculars and look for humpbacks migrating north.
- Picnicking & Relaxation: The grassy reserve behind the beach has picnic tables and shade, perfect for a casual lunch. There are no cafés directly on the beach, so pack your own supplies.
- Dog-Friendly Area: Dogs are allowed off-leash north of the flagged swimming area, making it a great spot for a morning run with your four-legged companion.
Suggested Time to Spend
Pilot Beach is best enjoyed as a half-day outing. Combine a morning swim or surf session with the coastal walk to Tacking Point Lighthouse, then picnic on the grass. If you’re visiting during whale season, allow an extra hour for watching from the headland. The beach is also a lovely spot for sunset – the light over the river mouth is stunning.
