Step into a prehistoric world of towering rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and bird-filled canopies at Dorrigo National Park, a World Heritage-listed gem on the NSW north coast. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, this lush park offers some of the most accessible ancient rainforest experiences in the country, with well-maintained walking tracks and a stunning Skywalk that takes you above the treetops. Whether you're a dedicated birder, a waterfall chaser, or simply seeking a cool, green escape, Dorrigo delivers an immersive natural encounter just a scenic drive from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Skywalk – A 70-metre cantilevered walkway that juts out over the rainforest canopy, offering breathtaking views of the Bellinger Valley and beyond. It’s a perfect spot for photos and spotting birds like the wonga pigeon and topknot pigeon.
- Wonga Walk – A 1.3 km loop boardwalk that winds through ancient Antarctic beech and stinging trees, past Crystal Shower Falls. You can even walk behind the waterfall for a refreshing misty experience.
- Crystal Shower Falls – A spectacular 20-metre waterfall that plunges into a pool; the walk behind it is a highlight. Access via the Wonga Walk or a shorter track.
- Never Never Picnic Area – A serene spot with picnic tables and a short walk to Never Never Falls, a broad, multi-tiered cascade surrounded by mossy boulders and ferns.
- Birdwatching – The park is a haven for birdlife, including the rare rufous scrub-bird, paradise riflebird, and the vibrant regent bowerbird. Early morning walks are best.
- Dangar Falls – Just outside the park near Dorrigo township, this 30-metre waterfall is easily accessible and perfect for a quick stop or a swim in the pool below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that half a day (3–4 hours) is enough to experience the Skywalk, walk the Wonga Loop, and enjoy a picnic. However, if you're keen on birdwatching or exploring longer trails like the Rosewood Creek Track (6 km return), consider a full day. The park is a wonderful stop on a self-drive itinerary between Coffs Harbour and the New England region, and can easily be combined with a visit to Dorrigo township for lunch or a coffee at the local cafes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Dorrigo Township – A charming historic town with a lively Saturday market, antique shops, and the Dorrigo Railway Museum, just 10 minutes from the park entrance.
