Perched on the edge of the Great Escarpment, Dorrigo is a cool-climate escape that feels a world away from the coast. This small town is the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park, where ancient rainforests, thundering waterfalls, and misty valleys create a landscape of raw beauty. The drive up the winding Waterfall Way is an attraction in itself, with each bend revealing another jaw-dropping view. Dorrigo is the kind of place where you trade beach towels for walking boots and swap sea breezes for the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park – Home to the famous Skywalk, a cantilevered platform that extends over the rainforest canopy. From here you get a bird’s-eye view of the lush valley below, with lyrebirds and bowerbirds often spotted in the treetops.
- Dangar Falls – A short walk from the town centre leads to these powerful falls, which cascade into a deep pool. It’s a popular spot for a picnic and a refreshing dip in summer.
- Dorrigo Rainforest Centre – Start your park visit here; the centre has excellent interpretive displays on Gondwana rainforest ecology and the history of the area.
- Waterfall Way – The scenic drive from Coffs Harbour to Dorrigo passes several spectacular waterfalls, including Ebor Falls and Wollomombi Falls, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
- Dorrigo Mountain & Crystal Cascades – A lesser-known walking track that winds through temperate rainforest to a series of smaller, serene waterfalls – perfect for those seeking solitude.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dorrigo can be explored as a day trip from Coffs Harbour (allow at least 4–5 hours for the drive and a couple of short walks), but to truly appreciate the national park’s trails and the surrounding area, plan for an overnight stay. A full day gives you time to do the Skywalk, the Wonga Walk (a 6.6 km circuit through the rainforest), and a visit to Dangar Falls. If you’re up for more adventure, a second day lets you explore the deeper trails or head further along Waterfall Way to the New England National Park.
