Thundering into a sheer 65-metre drop, Apsley Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in New South Wales, yet it remains delightfully uncrowded. Located within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, this dual-drop cascade is at its most powerful after rain, when the roar of water echoes off the gorge walls. The walk to the lookout is short and wheelchair-accessible, making it a spectacular stop for anyone driving the Waterfall Way between Armidale and the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- First and Second Falls lookouts: Two main viewing platforms offer different perspectives of the main drop and the narrower second cascade downstream. The lower lookout gives you a real sense of the gorge’s scale.
- Riverside Walk: A 1.4 km loop (one way) that follows the Macleay River upstream to the base of the falls. It’s an easy walk through eucalypt forest with plenty of birdlife – keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the cliffs.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park: The falls are the park’s star attraction, but the surrounding wilderness offers deep gorges, wild rivers and excellent bushwalking. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest site.
- Picnic area and facilities: There’s a well-maintained picnic ground with tables, gas barbecues and toilets right near the car park, making it an easy place to stop for lunch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is enough to take in both lookouts and walk the Riverside Trail. If you’re a keen photographer or want to explore more of the park’s walking tracks, allow half a day. The falls are at their best after rain, so check the forecast before you go – a misty morning can add a magical atmosphere.
