Plunging dramatically into a narrow gorge in the Apsley Macleay Gorges region, Tia Falls is a thunderous spectacle of water and rock. This multi-tiered waterfall, fed by the Tia River, is at its most powerful after rain, when the roar of the cascade fills the surrounding bushland. It’s an easy detour for self-drivers exploring the New England Highway, offering a refreshing break and a chance to feel the spray on your face.
Highlights & What to See
- Lower Tia Falls: The main drop, a 30-metre cascade into a dark pool. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a viewing platform that puts you right in front of the action.
- Upper Tia Falls: A less-visited series of cascades upstream. A rougher track rewards with quieter views and a sense of discovery.
- Picnic Area: Near the car park, shaded tables make a perfect spot for lunch. Listen for the lyrebirds mimicking chainsaws and camera shutters.
- Walcha: A 20-minute drive away, this historic town is famous for its bronze sculptures and as a gateway to the gorge country. Stop at the Visitor Information Centre for maps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours if you’re just visiting the lower falls and having a picnic. If you’re keen to explore the upper falls and do some short bushwalks, allow half a day. The falls are best in late autumn to early spring when water flow is reliable; in summer they can dwindle to a trickle. Combine with a drive through the Apsley Gorge for a full afternoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Walcha: A charming country town with galleries, a brewery, and the iconic ‘Bustle of the Bush’ sculpture trail.
- Tamworth: About 90 minutes west, Australia’s country music capital offers museums, a planetarium, and the Big Golden Guitar.
- New England Highway: The drive itself is scenic, with rolling hills and historic villages like Uralla (famous for Captain Thunderbolt’s grave).
