Just south of Coffs Harbour, Sawtell is a laid-back coastal village where a long, palm-fringed beach meets a friendly main street of cafés and boutiques. It has a relaxed, slightly bohemian vibe that makes it an ideal stop for a beach day or a quiet overnight on a New South Wales road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Sawtell Beach: A wide, patrolled beach with gentle waves, perfect for swimming, long walks, and watching the sunset over the headland.
- Boambee Creek: A calm, tidal creek at the southern end of the beach, great for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or a peaceful picnic by the water.
- Sawtell Headland Reserve: A short coastal walk with panoramic views, a small memorial, and a popular spot for whale watching (June–November).
- First Avenue: The village’s main street, lined with heritage buildings housing artisan bakeries, ice-cream parlours, and boutique stores—don’t miss the famous Sawtell Gelato.
- Bongil Bongil National Park: Just inland, this park protects coastal rainforest and wetlands, with walking trails through towering swamp mahogany and paperbark trees.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a half-day to a full day in Sawtell sufficient. Arrive in the morning for a coffee and a stroll along First Avenue, then spend the middle of the day on the beach or paddling on Boambee Creek. If you can, stay for sunset drinks at the Sawtell Beach Surf Club—the view is sublime. For a relaxed overnight, combine Sawtell with a visit to Coffs Harbour or the nearby Solitary Islands.
