Coffs Harbour is a laid-back coastal city on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where the hinterland meets the sea. Famous for the Big Banana, it offers a mix of pristine beaches, national parks, and a thriving café culture. The subtropical climate makes it a year-round destination for swimming, surfing, and exploring lush rainforests.
Highlights & What to See
- The Big Banana – Australia's first big thing, a fun family attraction with a plantation tour, ice skating, and water park.
- Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve – A short walk from the marina leads to a headland where thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters nest. Stunning views of the coast.
- Park Beach – The main surf beach, patrolled and perfect for swimming, with a long promenade for walking or cycling.
- Dorrigo National Park – Part of the Gondwana Rainforests, this World Heritage site features the Skywalk boardwalk through the canopy and dramatic waterfalls.
- Coffs Harbour Jetty – A revitalised harbour area with seafood restaurants, a Sunday market, and the Coffs Coast Discovery Centre.
- Solitary Islands Coastal Walk – A 60-km trail linking stunning beaches and headlands; do a section from Coffs to Sawtell for whale watching (June–Nov).
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to hit the highlights. Spend the first day on the beach and the Big Banana, the second day exploring Dorrigo National Park (allow a full day for the drive and walks), and the third morning at the Jetty or a coastal walk before heading south. If you're passing through on a road trip, even a half-day stop for a swim and a banana smoothie is worthwhile.
