Onkaparinga River National Park is a rugged slice of wilderness just 40 minutes south of Adelaide, where the Onkaparinga River has carved a deep gorge through ancient sandstone and limestone. This is a place for walkers and nature lovers who want to escape the city without driving for hours. The park feels raw and untamed, with steep cliffs, dense bushland, and the constant sound of the river below. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, echidnas, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day here – enough time to tackle one or two walks and soak in the gorge views. If you’re keen on mountain biking or want to explore multiple trails, set aside a full day. The park is compact, so you can easily combine it with a morning in McLaren Vale’s cellar doors or an afternoon at the coast. Arrive early to avoid the heat in summer and to secure parking at the main trailheads.
