Stretching south of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula is a sun-drenched realm of rolling vineyards, rugged coastlines, and sleepy beach towns. It's the kind of place where you can taste world-class shiraz in the morning, swim with wild dolphins by lunch, and hike through ancient bushland as the sun melts into the Southern Ocean. This is South Australia's backyard playground, and it's begging to be explored.
Highlights & What to See
- McLaren Vale wine region – A patchwork of cellar doors and olive groves, with bold reds and a laid-back vibe. Don't miss the d'Arenberg Cube for its quirky architecture and views.
- Granite Island – Just off Victor Harbor, this wind-scrubbed granite outcrop is home to a colony of little penguins. Walk the causeway or take the horse-drawn tram.
- Deep Creek Conservation Park – The peninsula's wild heart: dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and trails that drop down to empty beaches. Keep an eye out for echidnas and kangaroos.
- Port Elliot & Middleton – Classic surf beaches with a retro seaside charm. Grab a pie from the Port Elliot Bakery and watch the waves roll in.
- Goolwa – A historic river port at the mouth of the Murray River, with a buzzing weekend market and a paddle-steamer heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least three days to do the Fleurieu justice. Use the first day to explore McLaren Vale's cellar doors and the coast around Port Willunga. Day two: head south to Victor Harbor, walk Granite Island, and hike a section of Deep Creek. On the third day, meander along the Coorong or take a river cruise from Goolwa. If you're short on time, a day trip from Adelaide can cover McLaren Vale and a quick stop at Victor Harbor – but you'll be itching to return.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Adelaide Hills – Cool-climate wine country and the charming German-influenced town of Hahndorf, just 40 minutes from McLaren Vale.
- Kangaroo Island – A wildlife wonderland a short ferry ride from Cape Jervis; plan at least two nights to see its rugged beauty.
- Coorong National Park – A serene lagoon system stretching southeast of Goolwa, perfect for kayaking and birdwatching.
- Barossa Valley – Australia's most famous wine region, a 90-minute drive north – pair it with the Fleurieu for a wine-lover's road trip.
