Rising dramatically from the turquoise waters of Coffs Harbour, Muttonbird Island is a narrow, rocky headland linked to the mainland by a short causeway. This nature reserve is a sanctuary for thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) that nest here from August to April, creating an unforgettable wildlife spectacle. The island also offers sweeping coastal views, a gentle walking track, and a fascinating glimpse into the area's Indigenous and maritime history.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–2 hours for a leisurely visit, including the walk and time to observe the birds. For the best experience, plan your visit for late afternoon so you can watch the muttonbirds return at dusk. The island is accessible year-round, but the shearwater colony is most active from August to April. Combine this with a morning at Coffs Harbour's beaches or a trip to the nearby Dorrigo National Park for a full day of nature.
