Straddling the New South Wales–Victoria border, Lake Mulwala is a vast, shimmering reservoir on the Murray River that draws water-sports enthusiasts, anglers, and nature lovers alike. Created by the Yarrawonga Weir, this expansive lake is famous for its submerged forest of dead red gum trees that rise eerily from the water, creating a striking landscape you won't find anywhere else. The surrounding towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala offer a laid-back vibe with plenty of pubs, clubs, and cafés, making it a perfect base for a few days of river life.
Highlights & What to See
- Submerged forest: Kayak or paddleboard among the skeletal red gums that emerge from the lake – it's especially atmospheric at sunrise or sunset.
- Water sports: Skiing, wakeboarding, and jet-skiing are huge here; hire a boat or join a tour to make the most of the wide, calm waters.
- Fishing: Cast a line for Murray cod, golden perch, and redfin. The lake is a renowned fishing destination, with several jetties and charter operators.
- Yarrawonga Weir: Walk across this historic weir to see the lake's outflow and enjoy panoramic views of the river and lake.
