Straddling the New South WalesVictoria border, Lake Mulwala is a vast, shimmering reservoir on the Murray River that draws water-sports enthusiasts, anglers, and nature lovers alike. Created by the Yarrawonga Weir, this expansive lake is famous for its submerged forest of dead red gum trees that rise eerily from the water, creating a striking landscape you won't find anywhere else. The surrounding towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala offer a laid-back vibe with plenty of pubs, clubs, and cafés, making it a perfect base for a few days of river life.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two full days to experience the lake's highlights. Day one can be spent on the water – hire a boat or kayak to explore the submerged trees and try your hand at fishing. Day two is ideal for a leisurely drive around the lake, visiting the weir, and enjoying a meal at one of the waterfront clubs. If you're into watersports, you could easily stretch your stay to three or four days.
