Rising dramatically from the coastal plain south of Sydney, the Illawarra Escarpment is a lush, rainforest-cloaked ridge that offers some of New South Wales' most spectacular escarpment walks and lookouts. This ancient sandstone plateau, part of the Great Dividing Range, is a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean and the patchwork of farms and towns below. The escarpment is also a cultural landscape, with deep significance to the Dharawal people, and its pockets of subtropical rainforest shelter towering red cedar trees and lyrebirds.
Highlights & What to See
- Sea Cliff Bridge – One of Australia's most scenic coastal drives, this cantilevered bridge clings to the cliffs just north of Wollongong; park at the southern end and walk the cycleway for jaw-dropping views of the escarpment meeting the sea.
- Illawarra Lookout (Stanwell Tops) – The quintessential escarpment viewpoint, offering a panoramic sweep from the Royal National Park in the north to Kiama in the south; come at sunset for the golden light.
- Kiama Coast Walk – A 22 km track that hugs the escarpment's edge, passing through rainforest pockets, past blowholes, and along clifftops with non-stop ocean views; do a shorter section from Kiama to Bombo Headland.
- Minnamurra Rainforest – A stunning remnant of subtropical rainforest in Budderoo National Park; follow the elevated boardwalk loop through giant ferns and fig trees to a cascading waterfall.
- Mount Keira & Mount Kembla – Two iconic peaks with walking trails leading to historic lookout platforms. Mount Keira's summit offers a bird's-eye view of Wollongong and the harbour.
- Jamberoo Valley – A green valley at the foot of the escarpment, home to dairy farms, the Jamberoo Action Park, and the quaint Jamberoo Pub – perfect for a countryside detour.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do justice to the escarpment's highlights, allow at least one full day – better still, two. A typical itinerary: morning walk at Minnamurra Rainforest (allow 1.5 hours), lunch in Kiama, then afternoon exploring the Sea Cliff Bridge and Stanwell Tops lookout. If you have a second day, hike a section of the Kiama Coast Walk or tackle Mount Keira. The escarpment is easily combined with a visit to Wollongong, the Southern Highlands, or even a side trip to Jervis Bay.
