With its blindingly white sand and impossibly blue water, Jervis Bay is the kind of place that makes you wonder if someone turned up the saturation. Just a three-hour drive south of Sydney, this marine paradise is home to some of the whitest beaches on Earth – Hyams Beach regularly vies for the Guinness World Record – and a protected bay where bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and migrating humpback whales are almost guaranteed sightings. The surrounding Booderee National Park, jointly managed by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal community, adds a layer of cultural depth and wild coastal beauty that rewards walkers, kayakers and anyone who simply wants to park themselves on a towel with a good book.
Highlights & What to See
- Hyams Beach – The headline act: squeaky-clean, blindingly white silica sand that stays cool underfoot even on scorching days. Arrive early to claim a spot, then wade into the calm turquoise water.
- Booderee National Park – A stunning headland-to-headland national park with walking tracks, secluded beaches (Murrays, Greenpatch, Cave) and the Booderee Botanic Gardens – the only Aboriginal-owned botanic gardens in Australia. Look for sea eagles and wallabies.
- Jervis Bay Marine Park – Snorkel or dive at the Point Perpendicular or the Bowen Island fur-seal colony. Kayak among dolphins in the sheltered waters, or take a whale-watching cruise from Huskisson (May–November).
- Huskisson – The main village hub, with a laid-back pub, fish-and-chip shops, and the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. Hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore Currambene Creek.
- White Sands Walk – A 3.5 km coastal trail linking Huskisson to Hyams Beach, hugging the shoreline with views of the bay and glimpses of stingrays in the shallows.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal. Spend day one on the beach and a short walk; dedicate day two to Booderee National Park – pack a picnic and explore the botanic gardens, then hike to Governor Head for panoramic views. A third day allows for a whale-watching cruise or a kayak trip to the dolphin playgrounds. If you're short on time, a day trip from Sydney is feasible but rushed – aim to stay overnight in Huskisson or Vincentia to catch the early-morning calm on the sand.
