Dorrigo National Park is a lush slice of Gondwana rainforest, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. Just an hour's drive west of Coffs Harbour, this park offers a stunning contrast to the sunburnt coast, with cool, misty air, ancient trees, and the roar of waterfalls. It's a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving an immersion in primeval nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Skywalk Lookout – An easy, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that juts out over the rainforest canopy, offering panoramic views of the Bellinger Valley and the coast beyond. It's the perfect introduction to the park's grandeur.
- Crystal Shower Falls Walk – A 2.6 km return track that takes you behind a cascading waterfall, where ferns and mosses cling to the rock walls. The walk is a sensory feast of cool spray and dappled light.
- Wonga Walk – A longer, more challenging 6.6 km loop that descends through subtropical and temperate rainforest, passing giant stinging trees, strangler figs, and the haunting calls of wompoo fruit-doves. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Never Never Picnic Area – A serene spot for a picnic by the creek, with easy access to the Never Never River and its swimming holes. Keep an eye out for azure kingfishers darting along the water.
- Birdwatching – Dorrigo is a birding hotspot; look for regent bowerbirds, paradise riflebirds, and the elusive Albert's lyrebird. Dawn and dusk are prime times.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day (6–8 hours) ideal to tackle the Skywalk, one or two short walks, and a picnic. If you're pressed for time, a half-day (3–4 hours) lets you experience the Skywalk and the Crystal Shower Falls Walk. For serious hikers, two days allow you to explore the longer trails and combine with nearby Bellingen. Arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the morning light filtering through the canopy.
