Just an hour east of Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges National Park is a lush, fern-filled escape from the city. Towering mountain ash forests, cool temperate rainforests, and sculpted gardens create a landscape that feels a world away from urban life. The park’s winding roads lead to quaint hillside villages, while its network of walking tracks offers everything from gentle strolls to challenging hikes. Whether you’re after birdlife, panoramic views, or a classic Devonshire tea, this is a place to slow down and breathe in the eucalyptus-scented air.
Highlights & What to See
- Sherbrooke Forest: This iconic section of the park is the best place to spot the superb lyrebird, especially in the early morning. The Lyrebird Track and Sherbrooke Picnic Ground are perfect for a peaceful walk among towering tree ferns.
- 1000 Steps (Kokoda Memorial Walk): A steep, 1.2 km stair climb that’s a Melbourne rite of passage. It’s dedicated to the Kokoda Track campaign and offers a great workout, with dense fern gullies providing cool shade.
- Puffing Billy Railway: While not inside the park, the historic steam train runs along its edge, chugging through fern gullies and over trestle bridges. A ride from Belgrave to Lakeside is a nostalgic highlight.
- Mount Dandenong Lookout: Drive to the summit for sweeping views across Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. The lookout is especially popular at sunset.
- National Rhododendron Gardens: Located in Olinda, these formal gardens burst with colour in spring, but are beautiful year-round with azaleas, camellias, and a fern gully.
- Doongalla Homestead & Forest: A quieter area with picnic spots and easy walks through tall mountain ash forest. The homestead ruins add a touch of history.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can get a good taste of the park in a half-day, but a full day is ideal to explore a couple of walks and enjoy a meal in one of the hill villages like Sassafras or Olinda. If you’re a keen hiker or want to ride Puffing Billy, plan for a full day or even an overnight stay. The park is easy to visit as a day trip from Melbourne, but staying in a B&B in the Dandenongs lets you enjoy the quiet forest mornings and evening wildlife.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
