Just a two-hour drive from Melbourne, Lake Mountain is Victoria’s most accessible alpine resort, offering a classic snow experience without the long haul to the high country. In winter, the slopes hum with families tobogganing and cross-country skiers gliding through snow-gum forests; come summer, the mountain transforms into a hiker’s haven of wildflowers and sweeping views. It’s a place where you can build a snowman in the morning and be back in the city for dinner – but you’ll want to linger.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Mountain works perfectly as a day trip from Melbourne – arrive early to secure your spot and spend 4–6 hours skiing, tobogganing or walking. If you want to explore multiple trails or simply soak up the alpine atmosphere, an overnight stay in nearby Marysville allows you to hit the slopes first thing and avoid the crowds. In summer, half a day is enough for a walk and a picnic, but you could easily fill a full day combining a summit hike with a visit to the nearby Yarra Valley wineries.
