Nestled in the lush green hills of the Scenic Rim, Canungra is a sleepy country town that punches well above its weight for travellers seeking a blend of outdoor adventure, local food and wine, and genuine rural character. The town’s name is Aboriginal for ‘small lyrebird’, and you’ll hear plenty of birdlife as you explore the surrounding eucalypt forests and vine-thicketed valleys. Canungra is the gateway to Lamington National Park and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, making it a perfect stop for self-drivers heading south from Brisbane or Gold Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Lamington National Park – a World Heritage-listed rainforest with spectacular walking trails, from the easy Tree Top Walk to challenging hikes to Box Log Falls and Mount Merino. Keep an eye out for pademelons and crimson rosellas.
- O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat – a legendary mountain lodge offering guided birdwatching, segway tours, and a canopy walkway. Even if you’re not staying, the day-ticket access is worth it.
- Canungra Valley Vineyards – a boutique winery set on a historic property with a lovely cellar door, tasting paddles, and woodfired pizzas overlooking the creek. The semillon and shiraz are local standouts.
- Canungra Military Museum – a fascinating collection of memorabilia from the nearby Kokoda Barracks, including a replica of a WWII jungle training camp. It’s a small but poignant tribute.
- Laheys Lookout – a short drive from town with sweeping views over the valley, especially golden at sunset. Perfect for a picnic stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Canungra and its surrounds. If you’re keen on a longer hike in Lamington, plan for a full day or even overnight at O’Reilly’s. For a relaxed self-drive itinerary, two nights in the area gives you time to taste at the wineries, do a morning walk, and visit the museum without rushing. The town itself is tiny – you can see it in 20 minutes – so the real draw is the surrounding nature and food scene.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Gold Coast Hinterland – the entire region is a network of national parks and charming villages, ideal for a multi-day road trip.
