Perched on a lush plateau in the Scenic Rim, Mount Tamborine offers a cool-climate escape just an hour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This pocket of ancient rainforest, waterfalls, and artisan villages feels a world away from the coast's high-rises. Wander through Gallery Walk’s boutiques and galleries, sip local wine, and hike through the national park to lookouts that sweep from the hinterland to the Pacific. It’s an easy detour for self-drivers exploring the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Tamborine National Park – Several sections protect subtropical rainforest, with walking tracks to Cedar Creek Falls, the Witches Falls lookout, and the Curtis Falls circuit. Keep an eye out for pademelons and satin bowerbirds.
- Gallery Walk – The main strip in North Tamborine is lined with art galleries, craft studios, fudge shops, and cafés. A great spot for picking up local pottery or tasting fresh-made cheeses.
- Mount Tamborine Winery – The region’s oldest vineyard, known for its verdelho and sparkling wines. The cellar door offers tastings and platters overlooking the vines.
- Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk – A 300-metre elevated walkway through the canopy, followed by a suspension bridge over a gorge. Excellent for birdwatching and forest views.
- Thunderbird Park – Adventure activities include tree-top obstacle courses, zip-lining, and gemstone mining. Also has a vintage car museum and a café.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mount Tamborine works well as a day trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, but an overnight stay lets you enjoy the quiet evenings and explore more trails. With a full day you can visit Gallery Walk, a winery, and do one walk in the national park. If you have two days, add the Skywalk and a second national park section, plus time for a leisurely lunch at one of the mountain’s farm-to-table restaurants.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lamington National Park – Part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, with more challenging hikes and ancient Antarctic beech trees.
- Springbrook National Park – Dramatic lookouts, waterfalls like Purling Brook Falls, and glow-worm caves.
- Gold Coast Hinterland – A scenic drive through the Numinbah Valley connects Tamborine to Springbrook and Lamington.
- Canungra – A small historic town with a military museum and the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat gateway.
- Byron Bay – About 90 minutes south, the famous beach town offers a complete contrast of surf, sand, and coastal walks.
