Broken Head Nature Reserve is a pocket of coastal wilderness just south of Byron Bay, where dramatic headlands, secluded beaches, and lush rainforest create a serene escape from the tourist crowds. The reserve’s name comes from the jagged cliff face that resembles a broken head, and its walking trails offer some of the most spectacular ocean views on the New South Wales north coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Broken Head Beach: A stunning, often uncrowded beach with clear turquoise water and soft sand, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Access is via a short walk through the rainforest.
- Bouddi Coastal Walk (section): The reserve is a key part of the longer Bouddi Coastal Walk, with a 4 km return trail from the car park to the headland. The path winds through coastal heath and offers panoramic views of the ocean and hinterland.
- Whale watching: From June to November, the headland provides an excellent vantage point for spotting humpback whales migrating along the coast.
- Rainforest pockets: The reserve protects remnants of littoral rainforest, with towering cabbage tree palms and a cool, shaded understorey. Listen for the calls of green catbirds and wompoo fruit-doves.
- Kings Beach: A smaller, more intimate cove accessible via a steep staircase, popular with local surfers and those seeking solitude.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours walking the coastal track and relaxing on the beach. If you want to swim, surf, or have a picnic, allow half a day. The reserve is also a lovely spot for sunrise or sunset photography, with the headland catching golden light.
