Thundering into a lush, fern-filled gorge in Nightcap National Park, Minyon Falls is one of northern New South Wales' most spectacular waterfalls. Fed by the Repentance Creek, the 100-metre drop plunges over a dramatic basalt cliff, creating a perpetual mist that nourishes a pocket of ancient rainforest. The viewing platform offers a heart-stopping panorama of the escarpment and, on clear days, all the way to the coast. This is a place that feels genuinely wild — a must for anyone exploring the hinterland of Byron Bay or the Tweed Valley.
Highlights & What to See
- Minyon Falls Lookout: The main viewing platform provides a head-on perspective of the falls and the vast Nightcap Range. Go after rain for maximum volume and rainbows in the spray.
- Minyon Loop Walk: A 6.5 km circuit that descends through towering brush box and strangler figs to the base of the falls (when open). The reward is a cool, spray-drenched pool and a close-up of the basalt columns.
- Protesters Falls: A short detour within the park, this pretty waterfall is named after the 1979 rainforest protests that saved the area from logging. It's a poignant spot with a swimming hole.
- Nightcap National Park: Beyond the falls, the park protects one of the last remnants of lowland subtropical rainforest in NSW. Keep an eye out for pademelons, lyrebirds and the elusive Albert's lyrebird.
- Whian Whian State Conservation Area: Adjacent to the park, this area offers additional walking trails and picnic spots, including the scenic Rocky Creek Dam.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Minyon Falls, enough for the lookout and a short walk. If you plan to do the full Minyon Loop or combine with a swim at Protesters Falls, allow half a day. The falls are accessible year-round, but the track to the base can close after heavy rain — check conditions locally. Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially on weekends.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Byron Bay: Just 40 minutes east, Byron offers world-class beaches, a vibrant food scene and the Cape Byron lighthouse walk. A perfect base for a day trip to the falls.
- Bangalow: A charming hinterland town with heritage buildings, excellent cafés and a popular farmers' market. Great for a relaxed lunch en route.
- Brunswick Heads: A laid-back coastal village with a river mouth perfect for kayaking and swimming. Less touristy than Byron, with a handful of great pubs and bakeries.
- Mullumbimby: Known as 'Mullum', this quirky town is a hub for organic food, alternative culture and the weekly farmers' market. The nearby Brunswick River offers lovely swimming holes.
- Uki: A tiny village at the foot of Mount Warning, with a famous pub and access to the Wollumbin National Park. A good stop for a drink or a meal after the falls.
