Ayers Rock Airport, also known as Connellan Airport, is the primary gateway to Australia's Red Centre and the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Located about 15 minutes' drive from Yulara, the purpose-built resort town, this small but efficient airport offers a surprisingly seamless arrival into one of the country's most dramatic landscapes. As you step off the plane, the red dirt and vast desert skies immediately signal that you've entered a world of ancient culture and natural wonders.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru (Ayers Rock) – The monumental sandstone monolith is the star attraction, best experienced at sunrise or sunset when its colours shift from ochre to fiery red.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – A striking group of 36 domed rock formations, with the Valley of the Winds walk offering breathtaking views.
- Field of Light – Bruce Munro's mesmerising installation of over 50,000 solar-powered spheres illuminates the desert after dark near Uluru.
- Cultural Centre – Located within the national park, this centre provides insight into Anangu culture and the Tjukurpa (Dreamtime) stories.
- Yulara Resort – The only accommodation base, featuring galleries, Indigenous art workshops, and the nightly Wintjiri Wiru drone-and-light show.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three full days based at Yulara, which allows for sunrise and sunset viewings of both Uluru and Kata Tjuta, plus a day for walks and cultural experiences. The airport's compact size means you can be through baggage claim and on your way to the resort in under 15 minutes, maximising your time on the ground. For a quick stop, a 24-hour layover is feasible to see Uluru at sunset and sunrise, but three days lets you soak in the full desert atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A dramatic gorge with the famous Rim Walk, about three hours' drive from Uluru.
- Alice Springs – The outback hub for exploring the MacDonnell Ranges, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the Kangaroo Sanctuary.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – Stunning gorges, waterholes, and walking trails like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen.
- Coober Pedy – The opal-mining town with underground homes and eerie moon-like landscapes, about an eight-hour drive south.
