Thundering into a narrow gorge on the edge of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, Apsley Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the New South Wales highlands. A short drive from Walcha, this two-tiered cascade plunges over 200 metres into a sandstone chasm, and the experience is as much about the raw, layered geology as it is about the water. The viewing platforms give you a vertiginous sense of the scale, and after good rain the roar is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls Lookout – an easy walk from the carpark delivers a front-row view of the main drop, especially spectacular in late autumn or after heavy rain.
- Rim Walk – a 1.4 km loop (allow 45 minutes) that traces the cliff edge, passing several smaller cascades and offering changing perspectives across the gorge.
- Lower Falls Lookout – a steep but rewarding 1.2 km return walk down into the gorge, where you can feel the spray and see the plunge pool up close.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park – the falls are the star attraction, but the park itself is a World Heritage-listed wilderness of deep gorges, eucalypt forests, and excellent birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that two to three hours is enough to take in the main lookouts and the Rim Walk. If you want to descend to the Lower Falls lookout, add another hour. The site works well as a half-day detour from Walcha or as a picnic stop on a longer drive through the New England region. Arrive early to beat the crowds and to catch the morning light on the gorge walls.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
