Angourie is a tiny coastal hamlet on the New South Wales north coast, best known for its world-class surf breaks and lush national park surrounds. This sleepy village feels a world away from the nearby tourist hubs, offering pristine beaches, coastal walks, and a relaxed, bohemian vibe that attracts surfers and nature lovers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Angourie Point – A legendary right-hand point break that hosts international surfing competitions. Even if you don't surf, watching the waves roll in from the headland is mesmerising.
- Angourie Blue and Green Pools – Two former quarry swimming holes now surrounded by lush vegetation. The Blue Pool is a popular swimming spot with crystal-clear water, while the Green Pool is more secluded.
- Yuraygir National Park – Stretching along the coast, this park offers excellent walking trails, including the Angourie to Yamba coastal walk, which passes through heathland, beaches, and offers whale-watching opportunities in season.
- Angourie Rainforest Reserve – A pocket of subtropical rainforest with a short boardwalk loop, perfect for spotting birdlife and enjoying cool shade.
- Surfing at Spookys and Main Beach – For experienced surfers, these breaks provide consistent waves. The area has a strong surf culture, with local boardriders and a laid-back atmosphere.
Suggested Time to Spend
Angourie can be explored in a day, but its relaxed pace encourages a longer stay. Spend a morning walking the coastal track from Angourie to Yamba (about 10 km one way), then cool off in the Blue Pool. Surfers will want at least two days to sample the different breaks. If you have more time, combine Angourie with a few days in Yamba or the Clarence Valley for a proper coastal escape.
