Yamba is a laid-back coastal gem at the mouth of the Clarence River, where pristine beaches meet a relaxed surf-town vibe. This former fishing village has blossomed into a beloved holiday spot without losing its authentic character – think long beach walks, excellent coffee, and a community that still waves hello. With its subtropical climate, national park backdrop, and river-meets-ocean setting, Yamba feels like a well-kept secret that’s just starting to be shared.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Beach – A stunning sweep of sand patrolled by lifeguards, perfect for swimming, sunbaking, or watching the waves roll in. The southern end is a favourite for surfers.
- Angourie Point – Just south of town, this iconic right-hand point break is a mecca for surfers. Even if you don’t surf, the coastal walk offers dramatic views and whale-watching in season.
- Yuraygir National Park – A pristine stretch of coastal wilderness with walking trails, hidden beaches, and abundant birdlife. The 65-kilometre Yuraygir Coastal Walk passes through Yamba and is a highlight for hikers.
- Clarence River – Australia’s largest coastal river system. Take a scenic cruise, kayak through the mangroves, or simply dangle a line off the breakwall – the river is teeming with fish.
- Yamba Lighthouse – The historic 1880 lighthouse on Pilot Hill offers panoramic views over the town, river mouth, and ocean. It’s a short walk from the town centre.
- Local Food & Drink Scene – Yamba’s cafés and bakeries are first-rate. Grab a flat white at Moby Dicks, fresh seafood at Yamba Fishermen’s Co-op, or craft beer at Yamba Brewing Co.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yamba rewards a relaxed pace. Most visitors stay 2–4 nights, which gives you time to explore the beaches, take a day trip to Angourie, and enjoy the river. If you’re short on time, a full day can cover the main sights – but you’ll want to linger. For self-drive itineraries, Yamba works well as a coastal stop between Sydney and Brisbane, or as a detour off the Pacific Highway en route to Byron Bay.
