Tallows Beach is a wild, uncrowded stretch of sand on the northern edge of the Hunter Valley region, just south of Byron Bay. This patrolled surf beach offers powerful waves, dramatic coastal views, and a relaxed vibe that feels a world away from the wine country inland. It's a favorite among local surfers and beachcombers, with a long shoreline perfect for long walks and whale watching from June to November.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing: Consistent swells and a long right-hand break make Tallows a go-to for experienced surfers. Beginners should stick to the southern end near the flags.
- Coastal Walk: The Cape Byron walking track starts here, leading up to the lighthouse with panoramic views of the coastline and hinterland.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating humpback whales. The beach is also a nesting site for sea turtles (November–March).
- Picnicking & Sunsets: The grassy headland at the northern end is ideal for a picnic with stunning sunset views over the ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the beach, do the Cape Byron walk, and watch the sunset. For surfers, a full morning or afternoon session is ideal. Combine with a visit to Byron Bay town for lunch or a coffee.
