Just an hour south of Sydney’s CBD, Royal National Park is a sprawling coastal wilderness that feels a world away from the city. Established in 1879, it’s the world’s second-oldest national park, offering dramatic sandstone cliffs, secluded beaches, and lush rainforest gullies. Whether you’re hiking the famous Coast Track, paddling the Hacking River, or simply picnicking at Wattamolla, this is where Sydneysiders come to reconnect with nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Coast Track: A 26-km multi-day hike (or shorter day walks) with jaw-dropping ocean views, passing through heathland, past figure-eight pools, and ending at Otford.
- Wattamolla Beach & Lagoon: A protected swimming spot with a waterfall cascading onto the sand – perfect for families.
- Figure Eight Pools: Natural rock pools shaped like figure eights, accessible only at low tide. Check tide charts and be prepared for a steep descent.
- Bundeena: A charming village with a ferry wharf, cafés, and access to Jibbon Head Aboriginal engravings.
- Royal National Park Visitor Centre: Offers maps, exhibits on local Aboriginal culture, and advice on current track conditions.
- Lady Carrington Drive: A scenic 10-km walking/cycling track along the Hacking River, through towering eucalypts and rainforest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring one or two highlights – say a morning walk to Wattamolla followed by an afternoon at Bundeena. If you’re hiking the Coast Track, allow two days with an overnight at North Era campground. For a relaxed visit, half a day is enough to picnic and take a short walk. Plan your visit around tides if you want to see the Figure Eight Pools.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
