Port Stephens is a stunning natural harbour about two hours north of Sydney, where the Hunter Valley’s vineyard-laced hinterland gives way to a vast, shimmering bay ringed by white-sand beaches and national parks. This is the kind of place where you can watch wild dolphins surf the bow of a boat in the morning, then hike through coastal rainforest and feast on freshly caught seafood in the afternoon. A perfect counterpoint to the wine country, Port Stephens delivers pure coastal magic.
Highlights & What to See
- Dolphin & whale watching – Port Stephens is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins, with cruises departing from Nelson Bay daily. Between May and November, humpback whales also migrate through the bay.
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk – A short but steep climb rewards with one of the best coastal panoramas in NSW, overlooking the bay, the islands and the Pacific Ocean.
- Shoal Bay & Fingal Bay – Two of the region’s finest beaches, offering calm swimming, beachfront cafés and a laid-back vibe. Fingal Bay’s sand spit connects to a small island at low tide.
- Stockton Beach sand dunes – The largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere stretch for 32 km. You can explore them on a 4WD tour, sandboarding or on a quad bike.
- Worimi Conservation Lands – Part of the same dune system, this area is managed in partnership with the local Worimi people, offering cultural tours and a chance to learn about Indigenous heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to experience the highlights without rushing. Spend one day on a dolphin cruise and the Tomaree walk, another exploring Stockton Beach and the dunes, and a third simply relaxing on the beaches or kayaking in the bay. If you’re self-driving from Sydney or the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens works well as a two-night stopover.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Anna Bay – The southern gateway to Stockton Beach, where you can join 4WD tours or simply enjoy the quiet surf beach.
- Nelson Bay – The main hub of Port Stephens, with a marina, shops, and the departure point for most cruises and water activities.
