Kiama, a coastal gem on the New South Wales South Coast, is a refreshing escape from the city, known for its dramatic blowholes, lush green hills, and relaxed seaside vibe. Just a two-hour drive south of Sydney, this charming town offers a perfect blend of natural wonders, outdoor adventures, and a thriving café culture that makes it a must-stop on any coastal road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Kiama Blowhole: The star attraction – a powerful natural blowhole that sends seawater spouting up to 25 metres high. Best at high tide or after rough seas, it’s a mesmerising sight that never gets old.
- Kiama Harbour & Little Blowhole: Wander the working harbour, watch fishing boats come in, and see the smaller but equally impressive Little Blowhole at the southern end of town.
- Easts Beach & Surfing: A patrolled beach with gentle waves, ideal for swimming and beginner surfers. The rock pools at the southern end are great for kids.
- Kiama Coastal Walk: A stunning 20-kilometre path linking Kiama to Gerringong, passing cliffs, beaches, and rainforest. Even a short section from the Blowhole to Bombo Beach offers spectacular views.
- Bombo Headland Quarry & Cathedral Rocks: An otherworldly landscape of basalt columns and rock formations, popular with photographers and geology buffs. It’s also a filming location for the movie Mad Max: Fury Road.
- Kiama Farmers Market: Held every Wednesday and Saturday, this vibrant market is perfect for stocking up on local produce, artisan bread, and gourmet treats for a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kiama is perfect for a day trip from Sydney or a relaxed overnight stay. If you’re driving the Grand Pacific Drive, allow at least 3-4 hours to see the blowhole, walk the headland, and grab a coffee. For a more immersive experience, stay one or two nights to explore the coastal walks, nearby beaches, and dine at the excellent seafood restaurants overlooking the harbour.
