Minnamurra Rainforest is a lush pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest within Budderoo National Park, just a short drive from Kiama on the NSW South Coast. This accessible slice of wilderness offers a serene escape into towering tree ferns, crystal-clear creeks, and the thunderous Minnamurra Falls. It's a perfect half-day detour for anyone exploring the Hunter Valley or the coast, blending gentle walking with immersive nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Falls Lookout – A short but rewarding walk leads to a platform with panoramic views of the cascading waterfall plunging into a deep gorge. Best after rain when the flow is strongest.
- Lyrebird Track – This elevated boardwalk loops through the rainforest canopy, offering chances to spot superb lyrebirds scratching for insects and hear their incredible mimicry.
- Rainforest Loop Walk – A 2.6 km circuit that winds past ancient sassafras trees, giant stinging trees (admire from a distance!), and over bubbling Minnamurra Creek. The interpretive signs explain the ecosystem beautifully.
- Picnic Area by the Creek – Shady tables near the creek make for a peaceful lunch spot, with the sound of water and birdsong as your soundtrack.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 2–3 hours to fully experience the rainforest – that includes the loop walk, a stop at the falls lookout, and time to relax by the creek. If you're keen on birdwatching or photography, add an extra hour for lingering on the Lyrebird Track. The park is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm, so plan to arrive by early afternoon to make the most of the light.
