Lake Windamere

Lake Windamere is a broad, man-made reservoir cradled by the low, bush-covered hills west of the Hunter Valley wine country. Far from the cellar-door crowds, this is a place for quiet water sports, bush camping, and spotting kangaroos at dusk. The lake’s calm, dark water reflects the sky, and the surrounding woodlands feel genuinely remote, yet it’s only a short drive from the vineyards of Broke and Pokolbin.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Windamere is best as a half-day stop or an overnight camping trip. If you’re just passing through, allow 2–3 hours for a paddle and a short walk. For a relaxing escape, stay one night at the reserve – you’ll have time for a sunset kayak, a campfire dinner, and a morning swim. It’s a low-key alternative to the busy wine-tasting itinerary.
