Lake Windamere is a broad, man-made reservoir cradled by the low, bush-covered hills west of the Hunter Valley wine country. Far from the cellar-door crowds, this is a place for quiet water sports, bush camping, and spotting kangaroos at dusk. The lake’s calm, dark water reflects the sky, and the surrounding woodlands feel genuinely remote, yet it’s only a short drive from the vineyards of Broke and Pokolbin.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking & paddleboarding – The lake’s sheltered bays are perfect for paddling; bring your own gear or hire from local operators in season.
- Fishing for golden perch and Murray cod – Cast a line from the bank or a small boat; a NSW fishing licence is required.
- Lake Windamere Walking Track – A 4 km loop through scribbly gum and ironbark forest, with lookout points over the water.
- Wildlife watching – Eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, and a variety of waterbirds are common, especially near the camping areas.
- Camping at the Lake Windamere Reserve – Unpowered sites right by the water, with basic facilities; ideal for a night under the stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lake Windamere is best as a half-day stop or an overnight camping trip. If you’re just passing through, allow 2–3 hours for a paddle and a short walk. For a relaxing escape, stay one night at the reserve – you’ll have time for a sunset kayak, a campfire dinner, and a morning swim. It’s a low-key alternative to the busy wine-tasting itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Wollombi – Historic settlement with a famous pub, art galleries, and scenic drives through sandstone country.
- Pokolbin – The heart of Hunter Valley wine tourism, with dozens of cellar doors and restaurants.
- Yengo National Park – Rugged bushwalking, Aboriginal rock art, and dramatic escarpments.
- Lostock Dam – Another peaceful reservoir for fishing and kayaking, less visited than Windamere.
