Lostock Dam
Lostock Dam, a serene water storage on the Paterson River about 40 kilometres north-west of Maitland, offers a peaceful escape into the bush-clad foothills of the Barrington Tops. Built in the early 1970s, the dam is surrounded by state forest and is a favourite for fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. The still waters reflect the surrounding eucalypts, and the only sounds are birdsong and the occasional splash of a fish. It’s a low-key, off-the-beaten-path destination that rewards travellers seeking quiet nature rather than crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Fishing & Boating: Lostock Dam is stocked with Australian bass, silver perch and golden perch. Bring your own kayak or canoe — there’s a small concrete boat ramp. The still water is ideal for a relaxed paddle.
- Picnic & BBQ Areas: Several shaded picnic tables and free electric barbecues are scattered along the foreshore. Pack a lunch and enjoy the view across the water to the forested hills.
- Lostock Dam Wall Walk: A short walk along the top of the dam wall gives you a sense of the engineering and a panoramic view up the valley. The spillway is particularly impressive after heavy rain.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, kingfishers, and wallabies. The surrounding state forest is home to a variety of birdlife, and the quiet coves are perfect for spotting waterbirds.
- Nearby Vineyards: While the dam itself is wild, you’re still in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country. Many cellar doors are within a 30-minute drive, making this a great spot for a morning on the water before an afternoon of wine tasting.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lostock Dam is a half-day destination. Most visitors come for a couple of hours to fish, picnic and stretch their legs. If you’re paddling or serious about fishing, allow three to four hours. There’s no camping on-site, so plan to head back to a nearby town or vineyard accommodation in the afternoon. The dam is best visited in the cooler months (March to November) when the weather is mild and the fishing is prime.
