Winding through the rolling hills of New South Wales, the Hunter Valley Wine Trail is Australia’s oldest wine region and a must for any oenophile. Just two hours north of Sydney, this sun-drenched valley is home to more than 150 cellar doors, where you can taste world-class Semillon and Shiraz amid vine-striped landscapes. Beyond the wines, the region offers gourmet food, art galleries, and hot-air balloon rides that paint the sky at dawn.
Highlights & What to See
- Cellar-door hopping – Start at iconic estates like Tyrrell’s Wines (est. 1858) and Brokenwood, then explore boutique producers such as Thomas Wines and Mount Pleasant.
- Hunter Valley Gardens – A 25-hectare floral wonderland with themed gardens, perfect for a leisurely stroll between tastings.
- Hot-air ballooning – Float above the vineyards at sunrise for panoramic views of the valley and the distant Brokenback Range.
- Cheese and chocolate trails – Pair your wines with local artisan cheeses at the Hunter Valley Cheese Company or indulge in handcrafted chocolates at Cocoa Nib.
- Hope Estate – A sprawling winery and brewery that also hosts open-air concerts and a popular weekend market.
- Pokolbin Village – A charming cluster of cellar doors, galleries, and cafés ideal for a relaxed afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to explore the wine trail properly. Use day one to visit the larger, well-known wineries along the main road, and day two to venture into the quieter back roads for boutique producers. If you’re short on time, a single day can cover 4–5 cellar doors, but you’ll miss the unhurried pace that makes the valley special. Plan to stay overnight in one of the region’s many vineyard cottages or B&Bs.
