Finke Gorge National Park
Deep in the red heart of Australia, Finke Gorge National Park is a place of ancient landscapes and profound silence. The park protects the Finke River, one of the world’s oldest waterways, which has carved a dramatic gorge through the MacDonnell Ranges. Here, you can walk among 350-million-year-old cycads, camp under a canopy of stars, and feel the deep time of the continent. It’s a must for anyone wanting to experience the raw, spiritual side of the Outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley: A lush oasis in the desert, home to the rare red cabbage palm. The 4WD track is an adventure in itself, and the walk among the palms is like stepping into a prehistoric world.
- Finke River Gorge: Hike along the sandy riverbed between towering red cliffs. The 2km Mpaara Walk follows an Aboriginal dreaming track and leads to a permanent waterhole.
- Cycad Gorge: A short, steep scramble rewards you with a grove of ancient cycads, living fossils that have survived since the time of the dinosaurs.
- 4WD Tracks: The park is a playground for 4WD enthusiasts. The track to Palm Valley is challenging but breathtaking, crossing the Finke River multiple times.
- Camping under the stars: The designated campgrounds are basic but magical. With no light pollution, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to explore the park properly. If you’re camping, two days and one night is ideal: arrive early, tackle the Palm Valley drive and walks, then spend the evening stargazing. The park is remote, so plan your fuel and water carefully. The best time to visit is during the cooler months (April to September); summer temperatures can be extreme.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- West MacDonnell National Park: A stunning chain of gorges and waterholes just west of Alice, perfect for hiking and swimming. Combine with Finke Gorge for a week-long Outback road trip.
- Kings Canyon: About 300km south-west, this massive canyon in Watarrka National Park offers epic rim walks and is a highlight of the Red Centre.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: Further west, the iconic monolith and domes are a bucket-list destination. A road trip from Alice Springs linking these parks is one of Australia’s greatest drives.
