Adelong is a charming gold-rush-era village tucked into the rolling hills of the Riverina, about 400 km southwest of Sydney. Once a bustling mining centre, today it offers a peaceful escape with a rich history, scenic countryside and a handful of excellent local producers. The main street feels like a step back in time, lined with heritage buildings and a friendly pub that serves a cold ale after a day of exploring.
Highlights & What to See
- Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins: Wander the atmospheric remains of a 19th-century stamper battery and learn how the town’s gold was crushed and processed. The surrounding reserve has picnic tables and walking tracks.
- Historic Main Street: Stroll past the Royal Hotel (1886), the old post office and the Court House – all beautifully preserved. Stop for a coffee at the local café or browse the antique shops.
- Adelong Creek: Try your luck at panning for gold in the creek; it’s a fun, family-friendly activity and you might just find a tiny speck.
- Local produce: Visit nearby orchards and vineyards – the region is known for cool-climate wines, stone fruits and olives. Many offer tastings and farmgate sales.
- Adelong Cemetery: A poignant spot with graves dating back to the 1850s, offering insight into the lives of early settlers and Chinese miners.
Suggested Time to Spend
Adelong can be explored in a half-day, but to truly soak up the atmosphere and visit the falls, allow a full day. Combine it with a night in nearby Tumut or Batlow to break up a longer road trip through the Snowy Valleys. The gold mill ruins are best in the morning light, and the main street comes alive around lunchtime.
