Nestled on the edge of the Snowy Mountains, Tumut is a charming country town that surprises visitors with its blend of outdoor adventure, rich history, and a thriving food scene. Known as the gateway to Kosciuszko National Park, this town offers a quintessential taste of rural New South Wales — think trout-filled rivers, pine forests, and a main street lined with heritage buildings and cosy cafes.
Highlights & What to See
- Kosciuszko National Park — Just south of town, this park is a playground for hikers, cyclists, and skiers. In summer, the Yarrangobilly Caves and thermal pool are highlights; in winter, it’s a base for snow sports.
- Blowering Dam — A vast water sports hub perfect for fishing, kayaking, and waterskiing. The dam wall is an impressive feat of engineering.
- Tumut River Walk — A scenic 5km loop along the river, passing through parks and historic bridges. Great for a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

A third day allows for a trip to Blowering Dam or a detour to the Batlow orchards. If you’re self-driving, Tumut makes a great overnight stop between Sydney and the Snowy Mountains.
