West Macdonnell National Park is a breathtaking expanse of rugged red-rock gorges, ancient waterholes, and dramatic desert landscapes that define the heart of Australia's Red Centre. Just a short drive from Alice Springs, this park offers an authentic outback experience with world-class hiking, swimming in permanent waterholes, and a profound sense of geological time. The park's West MacDonnell Ranges stretch for over 200 kilometres, creating a series of spectacular chasms and cliffs that glow in the afternoon light.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge – A stunning natural amphitheatre with a permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim; the 7.5 km Pound Walk circles the gorge for sweeping views.
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the range with a shaded walking trail and a chance to spot black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, sheer-walled chasm best visited around midday when sunlight beams directly to the floor, creating a fiery glow.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool waterhole flanked by red cliffs, ideal for a midday dip; the Dolomite Walk explores ancient seabed formations.
- Ochre Pits – A culturally significant site where Aboriginal people have sourced ochre for thousands of years; the multi-hued cliffs are a photographer's dream.
- Redbank Gorge – A remote, narrow gorge with a permanent waterhole; adventurous hikers can scramble through the boulders to reach the end.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully experience the park's highlights, plan for at least two full days. This allows time to drive the entire 200 km loop (unsealed in parts) and tackle a few short walks or one longer hike. Many visitors base themselves in Alice Springs and do day trips, but staying at one of the park's campgrounds (like Ormiston Gorge or Ellery Creek) lets you catch the magical sunrise and sunset colours. If you only have one day, focus on the eastern section: Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge.
