Perched on a rocky ridge overlooking the vast expanse of the Australian outback, the Living Desert Sculptures is a breathtaking fusion of art and landscape. Located near Broken Hill, this open-air gallery features twelve monumental sandstone sculptures created by international artists during a symposium in the 1990s. As the sun sets, the sculptures glow in warm hues, offering a magical experience that feels both ancient and contemporary.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunset Viewing: The sculptures are designed to be best appreciated at sunset, when the low light accentuates their forms and casts dramatic shadows across the desert.
- Walking Trails: A short, easy loop trail leads you around the sculptures, with interpretive signs explaining each artwork's inspiration and cultural significance.
- Panoramic Views: From the summit, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the Barrier Ranges, the distant Broken Hill cityscape, and the endless plains—perfect for photography.
- Stargazing: After sunset, the remote location offers some of the darkest skies in New South Wales, ideal for spotting the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan to arrive about an hour before sunset to allow time for the short walk and to find a good viewing spot. The experience itself lasts around 1–2 hours, but many visitors linger to watch the sky change colours and the stars emerge. If you're keen on photography or stargazing, you could easily spend 3 hours here.
