Menindee Lakes, a series of interconnected freshwater lakes in far western New South Wales, offers a starkly beautiful outback escape. This vital wetland system, part of the Darling River, attracts birdlife and provides a serene setting for camping, fishing, and stargazing under some of Australia's darkest skies. It's a place where the vastness of the interior meets the tranquility of water.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching at Lake Menindee: Spot pelicans, swans, and over 200 bird species, especially during spring and after floods.
- Kinchega National Park: Explore historic shearing sheds, Aboriginal scar trees, and the woolshed ruins; camp by the Darling River.
- Sunset at Sunset Strip: Watch the sky blaze over the water at this popular lakeside camping area.
- Fishing for Murray Cod and Yellowbelly: Try your luck in the lakes or the Darling River; a fishing licence is required.
- Menindee Town: Visit the historic Menindee Hotel (one of the oldest in NSW) and the Burke and Willis memorial.

Give yourself at least two full days to experience Menindee Lakes properly. One day to explore Kinchega National Park and the lakes, another for fishing, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water. If you're short on time, a day trip from Broken Hill (about 110 km away) is possible, but you'll miss the magic of an outback sunset and sunrise over the lakes.
