Govetts Leap Lookout is one of the Blue Mountains’ most dramatic viewpoints, offering a heart-stopping panorama of the Grose Valley from a sheer sandstone cliff edge. Named after the convict who supposedly jumped from here to evade capture, the lookout delivers a vertiginous, unfenced view that plunges 300 metres to the valley floor. On clear days, the scene unfolds in layers of blue-grey eucalypt forest, sculpted rock formations, and the distant hazy horizon.
Highlights & What to See
- Grose Valley vista: The lookout’s main draw is the sweeping, multi-hued view of the valley, with the Bridal Veil Falls cascading down the opposite cliff face after rain.
- Bridal Veil Falls: This slender, seasonal waterfall is a highlight, especially in spring or after heavy rain when it plunges dramatically into the valley.
- Short walks: The easy 1.5 km Govetts Leap Walk takes you from the lookout to the base of the falls, through heath and forest with excellent birdlife.
- Sunrise/sunset: The lookout faces east, making it a prime spot for sunrise photography when the cliffs glow golden.
- Nearby Evans Lookout: A short drive or walk away, offering a different perspective of the valley and a less crowded experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes at the lookout itself, plus another hour if you plan to walk the Govetts Leap Trail to the base of the falls. To fully appreciate the changing light and explore the adjacent walking tracks, budget a total of 1.5–2 hours. The site is easily combined with a morning at nearby Blackheath village (café and antique shops) and a picnic lunch in the surrounding parkland.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
