Perched on the edge of the Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains, Evans Lookout delivers one of the region’s most jaw-dropping panoramas. From this clifftop platform, you gaze across a vast chasm of eucalyptus forest, sandstone cliffs, and the distant hazy blue ridges that give the mountains their name. It’s a classic photo stop and the starting point for some of the area’s best bushwalks, including the Grand Canyon Track. The lookout is easily accessible, making it a perfect quick detour or a gateway to a longer adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Clifftop views: The main platform offers a sweeping vista over the Grose Valley, with dramatic sandstone cliffs and deep gullies. On clear days, you can see as far as Mount Hay and Mount Banks.
- Grand Canyon Track: One of the Blue Mountains’ finest walks, this 6.3 km loop descends into a lush, fern-lined canyon with waterfalls, creek crossings, and towering cliffs. It starts and ends at the lookout car park.
- Short nature walks: For a quicker taste, try the 1 km Evans Lookout Nature Track, which winds through heath and offers more elevated views.
- Birdwatching and wildflowers: Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, cockatoos, and rosellas. Spring brings a burst of wildflowers, including waratahs and boronia.
- Sunrise and sunset: The lookout faces east, so sunrise is spectacular. Sunset lights up the cliffs in golden hues.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you’re just stopping for the view, allow 20–30 minutes. To walk the Grand Canyon Track, set aside 3–4 hours (moderate difficulty). Combine with a picnic lunch for a half-day outing. The lookout is a great addition to a day trip from Sydney or Katoomba.
